This presentation will give an overview of some of the more innovative technological advances related to energy efficiency and generation in wastewater treatment plant design, including a summary of waste to energy digestion methods and the benefits of sludge conditioning for anaerobic digestion utilising the BioCrack system. A brief overview will also be given on the new Nereda biological treatment system that was developed in the Netherlands and which is presently being installed in wastewater treatment plants in Ireland. This system dramatically reduces plant footprint and energy consumption in comparison to conventional wastewater treatment processes.
